What do you know? How do you know? What is important to you? To this class you all bring a variety of experience and memories. You likely come from different educational backgrounds. No doubt your expectations for this class are equally varied. Despite this—perhaps because of this—the end of this course should find you communicating your ideas effectively and with a confidence consistent with the expectations of collegiate writing. Not surprisingly, the ability to write well shares a direct link with the ability to speak convincingly, and both are essential for meeting the standards of the university and for functioning as dynamic and respected members of society. What good are ideas without the skills with which to express them? To this end, through this class you shall learn to think and write critically and formally in sophisticated English, expanding and deepening your vocabulary and your ability to achieve the current standards of grammar and mechanics. Moreover, the class will place great emphasis on strategies for editing and revision to further your ability to be critical of your own writing. I also hope that through this process you will arrive at a deeper understanding of not only what other thoughts are possible, but also that your thoughts are of great value, and the more effectively you communicate them, the more impact you will have on the world around you.
