A Message from the Superintendent

Dear DA family and friends– February is upon us, and while it’s still cold outside, spring is in sight and coming up fast. A busy spring it will be, too– we have a number of exciting projects that’ll be getting underway soon, providing improvements to our learning spaces, athletic fields, buildings infrastructure and systems, and school security and safety. Here’s a brief update. Athletic Fields: Work on both the lower softball/soccer field and Dave Kelly Field will get underway this spring. Construction will begin on the lower field as soon as weather allows, continuing into late May when attention will turn to Dave Kelly Field and the track and field spaces. The Bill Mokay Invitational Track and Field Tournament will still take place at our facility on May 7-8, fitting one two events in before the track is renovated. Work will continue on the fields through the summer, with completion anticipated before Labor Day 2025. The fields will be available for the 2025-2026 school year. Ag & Technology Innovation Lab: renovation of our technology area will get underway July 1. This work will create new technology-focused instructional spaces and upgrades to instructional spaces for agriculture and fabrication spaces and equipment. Smart Schools Initiative: we anticipate starting these improvements to the safety and security of our school July 1. This project includes replacing all security cameras with upgraded technology, installation of external security strobes to signal when a school lockdown is in place, and additional security measures in the main office. Energy Performance Contract: work is anticipated to begin July 1 on this project, with new LED lighting, upgraded heating, air handling and air quality controls, and making walls, windows, floors and roofs more weathertight. Naturally, we will take measures to ensure safety during construction, including barriers and temporary changes to some building access points. We’ll communicate this information in more detail as we get closer to project starting dates. We also want to celebrate the performance of our students on the most recent New York State Assessment Tests for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, and on the new assessment in 5th grade Science. Student proficiency was among the highest for our BOCES district at all grade levels and subject areas, and is significantly above the state average. Improvements in proficiency were noted on almost every assessment from the year before. You can learn more about NYS assessment scores at https://data.nysed.gov/. Congratulations to our students for their hard work, and to our teachers and staff for the skill and dedication that they bring to the classroom every day. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Best wishes, Carey Shultz
